KOMF expresses concern about the serious situation of children who are begging or working in the streets

The Coalition of NGOs for the Protection of Children – KOMF, expresses concern about the serious situation of children who are begging or working in the streets. In recent days, an increase in the number of children begging has been noticed, especially late at night.

Children are facing a number of serious risks to their health and lives. Children under three years old and babies exposed to high temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius during the day are no exception here. Children in street situations are exposed to forms of violation of children’s rights, including: neglect, maltreatment, physical and emotional abuse. Children are begging even late at night, exposing themselves to the risk of sexual exploitation and/or trafficking.

KOMF calls on municipalities and municipal institutions to take urgent measures to protect the health and well-being of children in street situations.

KOMF calls on parents not to misuse and exploit children for begging and hard work. Exploitation of children constitutes a criminal offense and is sanctioned according to the Criminal Code of Kosovo.

KOMF calls on citizens, especially those who come from the diaspora, not to offer alms to children. Giving alms can further encourage children to go out on the streets, thus endangering children’s health, protection and well-being.
