Positive cases with Covid-19 are growing rapidly in last weeks and we are already facing a new wave of infection.
According to health experts, the new wave of Covid-19 infections, in most cases the Delta variant, is also attacking young people. The latest data from the Ministry of Health show that 99% of the latest results of cases with Covid-19 are of the Delta variant.
According to official reports from the Ministry of Health, the Delta variant is no longer sparing children either. Only during the last two days, the number of children aged 00-10 years infected with Covid-19 virus was 76, while the number of infected people aged 10 – 19 was 373. The total number of positive cases yesterday was 2110.
These numbers should be a reason for parents, citizens and institutions to turn their attention and get mobilized to protect the health of citizens, and mostly health of children from Covid-19.
On the other hand, the Pediatric Clinic under the University Clinical Center is facing a large number of children who are seeking treatment due to other viruses but also Covid-19. Five children infected with Covid-19 have been hospitalized in the past week, while 11 others have only sought outpatient care. Therefore, in addition to the already known measures (wearing masks, keeping the distance and taking care about hygiene), KOMF requires all parents and citizens to be vaccinated to protect themselves and, most importantly, children but also public health in general!

The new wave of infections could deepen even further with the start of the school year in September 2021. One of the preconditions for the starting the school year should be the vaccination of teaching and supporting staff.
KOMF requires teachers to be vaccinated in order to protect health in general, with particular children’s health. KOMF urges Ministry of Education and Municipal Directorates for Education to encourage teachers to be vaccinated.
KOMF requests from the Ministry of Health that in addition to regular vaccination in vaccination centers, to provide opportunities for mobile vaccination services for teachers in schools or in more remote areas.
There is a continuing public concern about the safety of Covid-19 vaccination during pregnancy and for breastfeeding mothers. In this regard, recent data (August 2021) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCs) show that the vaccine is safe and effective for pregnant women and nursing mothers. The data demonstrate that the benefits of the vaccine for pregnant women far outweigh any known or potential risks.
According to a seroepidemiological study conducted by the National Institute of Public Health, only 38.8% of the population has positive IgG, concluding that collective immunity has not yet been achieved. Therefore, the most efficient and cheapest measure is the mass vaccination of the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
Vaccination is everyone’s responsibility, to protect not only themselves but also the others. Therefore, KOMF calls on all citizens, with special emphasis on parents, educational staff and health staff to be vaccinated to protect children, themselves and public health.
